Bœrsch

Église Saint-Médard

Presentation

The building has been listed as a historic monument since 1930. The tower is a vestige of the first church built in the 12th century by the chapter of Strasbourg cathedral, whose bishop was lord of Boersch. It was burnt down in 1385, leaving only the lower 2 floors of the tower.A second church was built at the end of the 14th and 15th centuries, but was later demolished to make way for the current building, which dates from the 17th century. The two lower storeys of the 12th-century tower were raised by 2 storeys during this construction, and a fifth storey in the neo-Gothic style was added in 1878. The Romanesque ground and ground floors are decorated with arcatures and Lombardy bands.
