Église Saint-Quirin

Presentation

Situated two kilometres from Saverne, the village of Haegen has a church to the east of the village centre. The first three levels of the bell tower of Saint-Quirin church are Romanesque. On the ground floor, a Romanesque crypt represents the building’s former choir. Damaged sculptures are embedded in the masonry on the 1st floor. The third floor, where the bell tower once stood, has a geminate window. The tower now has 5 storeys, the last two of which were added in the 19th century. The nave and choir also date from the 19th century.

Château du Grand-Géroldseck

Presentation

Now in ruins, this medieval castle overlooking the commune of Haegen was built in the early 12th century. One of the oldest castles in the Vosges mountains, it protected the territories of a great Germanic noble family, the Geroldsecks. It underwent major alterations in the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries before being abandoned and destroyed in the late 1400s. What remains from its Romanesque period are its walls and its large stone keep with bosses, built around 1200 and now visible from a distance of 20 km. An important part of the region’s heritage, the castle has been listed as a historic monument since 1898.
