Now in ruins, this medieval castle overlooking the commune of Haegen was built in the early 12th century. One of the oldest castles in the Vosges mountains, it protected the territories of a great Germanic noble family, the Geroldsecks. It underwent major alterations in the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries before being abandoned and destroyed in the late 1400s. What remains from its Romanesque period are its walls and its large stone keep with bosses, built around 1200 and now visible from a distance of 20 km. An important part of the region’s heritage, the castle has been listed as a historic monument since 1898.
