Église Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul

Presentation

All that remains of the Romanesque church built around 1220 is the base of the bell tower, which bears witness to a period of transition between the Romanesque and Gothic styles. Inside the bell tower (baptismal chapel on entering on the right, south-west of the nave) is a beautiful Romanesque portal, sculpted and polychrome. Its tympanum, set in a pointed arch, depicts Christ blessing surrounded by the apostles Peter and Paul. The lintel is decorated with a representation of the parable of the wise and foolish virgins: all knock on the door of Paradise, the first are welcomed by Jesus, while the foolish virgins find the door closed.

Château Saint-Léon

Presentation

All that remains of the fortified castle built in the early 13th century in the centre of Eguisheim is part of an octagonal enclosure wall with bosses. The castle was replaced by a residence in the 16th century and a neo-Romanesque chapel in the 19th century dedicated to Saint Léon (Léon IX, a pope born in Eguisheim).
