Église Saint-Morand

Presentation

In the nave of this neo-Romanesque building is the sarcophagus of Saint Morand, a monk who died in 1115. The lid depicts the dead saint dressed in priestly vestments. The upper slab housing the recumbent statue dates from the period between the 12th and 13th centuries.

The saint is depicted in priestly vestments. A small figurine of a sick person lying on his right side is a reminder of the saint’s healing powers. The lower slab on which the sarcophagus rests has two openings through which pilgrims could pass their hands to obtain a cure. It was also possible to stroke the figure of the sick person. The lions supporting the sarcophagus date from 1886.

Saint-Morand church also has a Romanesque tympanum on the right-hand side door leading to the convent buildings. It depicts Christ blessing surrounded by Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The workmanship of this bas-relief is close to that of the Saint-Gall portal in Basel Cathedral.
