The keep and dwelling date from the late 12th century. This castle was intended to defend the abbeys of Mont Sainte-Odile, Niedermunster, Truttenhausen and Andlau. The main building, built of fine rusticated stonework, still features Romanesque bays and an oriel window that, when viewed from the outside, resembles the chevet of a Romanesque apse decorated with skylights. It was in fact a small oratory. The interior of the semi-circular vault shows traces of polychrome decoration. A niche served as a tabernacle.
